Happy Birthday, Beatrix!
On this day in 1866, Beatrix Potter was born in London, England. Best known for her classic children’s story, The Tale of Peter Rabbit, which she not only wrote but illustrated, Potter was an accomplished artist, a skilled farmer, a knowledgeable scientist, and a passion conservationist. B. Potter died on December 22 at Castle Cottage.
Interesting fact about Mrs. Potter: The Tale of Peter Rabbit was self-published. After failing to find a buyer/publisher for her writing and illustrations, she funded the project herself. Eventually, Frederick Warne & Co. decided the “bunny book” would sell, and they backed the project. On October 2, 1902, Peter Rabbit was published, becoming an immediate success.
